Reading for Pleasure
At William Bellamy Primary School, we embrace a Reading for Pleasure ethos for both our pupils and staff alike. Reading is celebrated throughout our school through...
- our colourful and engaging reading environments
- making the most of opportunities for reading in every lesson
- welcoming author visits/workshops
- exposure to new and unknown authors and a wide variety of texts
- our reading incentives
At William Bellamy it is our mission to get every child reading regularly, by choice, and we provide any support to every child, especially those in greater need.
Research has revealed time and time again that reading for pleasure supports our young learners to become better and keen readers, and is integral in fostering life-long skills. What's more, reading for just 10 minutes a day can also improve your mental well-being.
Seeing and hearing an adult read, whether at home or in school, provides good role modelling to aid children to improve their fluency and expression. We believe that reading should be promoted as a pleasurable experience throughout our school and the wider community and we expect all classes to end the school day with a class story, read to by the class teacher.
