International Mother Language Day Celebration - 21.02.2024

Origins

International Mother Language Day was established by UNESCO in 1999 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide.

The date, February 21st, was chosen to commemorate the Bangladesh Language Movement, a historic protest advocating the recognition of Bengali as a state language in Pakistan in 1952.

Why Is It Celebrated?

To celebrate linguistic diversity and the importance of mother languages in preserving cultural heritage.

To promote multilingualism and encourage people to embrace their mother language while also appreciating others.

How It Is Celebrated Across the Globe

Interactive Language Booths: Engage students in fun language activities, quizzes, and games to celebrate the rich tapestry of languages.

Cultural Performances: Showcase diverse linguistic traditions through music, dance, and drama.

Language Parade: Organize a lively parade where participants dress up in traditional attire, representing different languages.

Which languages do you speak?

Let's encourage students and staff to share their linguistic backgrounds.

Learn how to greet someone in school in one of our most common languages.

"Hello" in various languages:

    • Congolese - "Mbote"
    • French - "Bonjour"
    • Twi - "Aane"
    • Hindi - "Namaste"
    • Nigerian - "Bawo"
    • Pakistani - "Salam"

"Languages are the vibrant threads weaving the tapestry of our world. Embrace diversity, celebrate languages, and foster a community where every voice is heard."

Chinese New Year Celebration

Welcome to our celebration summary of the Chinese New Year  a vibrant and significant festival observed by millions around the world.

Origin: The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, originated in ancient China over 3,500 years ago.

Meaning: The festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, symbolizing new beginnings, family reunion, and the hope for good fortune in the upcoming year.

Chinese Zodiac Animals

Each year is associated with an animal from the Chinese zodiac cycle, and 2024 is the Year of the Dragon.

Dragon Significance: The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. People born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to be ambitious, passionate, and charismatic.

  Celebrations in London and   Worldwide

London Celebrations: London hosts one of the grandest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of Asia, with a colourful parade, performances, and traditional dragon dances in Chinatown.

Global Celebrations: Chinese communities around the world celebrate with feasts, parades, and cultural performances, showcasing the diversity and richness of Chinese traditions.

                   Red Wallet Tradition

The exchange of red envelopes or red wallets, known as "Hongbao," is a traditional practice during the Chinese New Year.

Symbolism: These red envelopes, often containing money, symbolize good luck, prosperity, and a wish for a bright future.

Key Information

When: The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and falls on a different date each year; in 2024, it is celebrated on January 22nd.

Why: The festival originated from legends of a mythical beast, Nian, which terrorized villages. The celebration's customs, including the use of firecrackers and red decorations, aim to scare away Nian and bring good luck.

What Animal Represents When You                            Were Born?

Each year in the Chinese zodiac is associated with an animal. Do you know which one represents the year of your birth? Understanding this can provide insights into your personality traits and characteristics.

Join us in celebrating the Chinese New Year and exploring the rich traditions that bring joy and unity to people all over the globe!
