English

In English this half term, our learning will continue to be supported by the “Power for reading” scheme. Through this, the children will develop their reading comprehension, drama, discursive skills and writing styles within a variety of genres.

Throughout this unit, the children will be linking their P4C skills to enable them to confidently address discussions brought on by the themes of the text.

In this topic this term our learning will focus on a text entitled:

"The iron giant".

The children will be planning, drafting, writing and editing their own learning and developing their skills in selecting exciting vocabulary and a range of

sentence styles.

In maths, we will continue to use and apply our maths skills, such as solve real life problems which may occur in everyday life.

With a focus on metal maths (the 4 operations) and the necessary effective strategies to grant all children success, our lessons will include modelling from the children. Hence allowing them to display, with reasons, their most effective chosen strategies for learning.

Our maths topics include Decimals, measurement, and money. In addition, each week, one of our lessons will focus on reasoning, to develop the children’s mathematical thinking. Also we shall continue to develop the children’s understanding of Singapore maths through visual teachings of:

“Bar modelling”.

Continue to support your child with their maths learning by encouraging them to complete their “My maths” Tasks.

For our Creative curriculum project this half term, we are encouraging the children to create a model of an Anderson shelter, to accompany our learning in class.

Please refer to the letter the letter the children will be receiving concerning this.

The children are now well into their Home-Learning routines with their spelling journals, reading logs and maths logs.

To further encourage them, all children should have brought home their login details which grants them access to

"My Maths"

This new program  replaces "Mathletics".

Please speak to your child's class teacher if there is a problem whilst trying to access this.

Below is an introduction into  "My Maths" and the benefits it will provide to

support the children's learning in Mathematics.

You will also find a clip to help support your children with their times tables.

Learning without Limits.

It's here, in Year 4 and it's working!!!!

As part of our learning and development, we have enthused our lessons in year 4 with a "Growth Mindset" ethos.

We view our brains as muscles with ideas and thoughts which need expanding and further exploration. This generates solutions which are free from being fixed or limited in choices.

Below is an example of this ethos we have been  applying in our everyday learning experiences.

Famous Failures

Growth Mindset Video

Having a growth mindset means that you know you can train your brain to get smarter.

English

Our learning in English has been based around the book

"Mungo and the Dinosaur island". We decorated our doors and maintained the theme.

From this we have developed our letter writing of formal and informal letters, made leaflets and created some non-chronological reports based on the Natural History Museum.

Image result for Roald dahl day

We celebrated this day by reading "The Twits" and various other stories throughout the week.

We re-enacted some senses from the text, wrote descriptions on entering the wonderful world of the chocolate factory and we even adapted George's medicine, making more ghastly!!!

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, the children will be developing practical approaches to the learning of their mental maths skills.

We aim to provide the children with the confidence to investigate and explore the mental relationships of the four operations. Furthermore, to engage and evoke discussion into applying strategies and methods which work best for them. Here is an example:

Image result for mental maths strategies

Our learning will combine school and home learning through the use of regular "Mathletics" tasks which you too (Parents and carers) can join us to support the children.

Speaking of MATHLETICS...

Picture 1

How many bronze and silver awards have you had on Mathletics?

Has anyone in Year 4 had a gold Mathlectics award?

How to get the most out of Mathletics!

• Take an active role in your child's Mathematics progress.

• Encourage your child to use Mathletics 3 to 5 times a week.

• Encourage a balance between the Full Curriculum section and Live Mathletics.

• Take time to work together with your child. The Support Centre in each activity will help show how to solve a particular problem.

• Encourage your child to do activities that challenge, rather than those he/she finds easy.

• If the Course is too difficult or too easy, then change to a more appropriate Course.

• Celebrate your child's successes. Print the Certificates out and put them on the fridge!
