Hello everyone!

We hope you had a nice relaxing week off and are ready for the final stretch to the six week holidays. We have some exciting things happening in year 2, so please keep visiting as photos will be appearing on this page!

In English this half term Year 2 will be writing recounts about some of their experiences. So far we have written two recounts. One about a fun day they had in the half term break and another about The Great Fire of London Theatre group. The children have been really successful so far and their work has been a pleasure to read!

Our next unit of work is instructions. Children will be writing instructions for different purposes making sure they use the key features of instructional writing.

If you would like to help your child be more successful in this unit ask them to give you instructions for everyday tasks such as brushing their teeth or making their bed.

Picture 2

We followed instructions to make Fruit Kebabs. Look at how fantastic they are! They tasted good too!

In Maths this half term children will be collecting data and deciding how they should organise it. They will also be looking at measures involving weight, volume and length. They will be using a range of different apparatus to help them get to grips with these areas. A great way to help them could be to make something together in the kitchen. Why not take a picture so that your child can bring it in and explain what they made and what measures they used?

In RE we are asking BIG QUESTIONS about the world we live in. So far we have been asking question about the world we live in and then research answers to those questions. The children have been using the 5W’s and H to do this (who, what, where, when, why and how). When you are out and about ask your child if they can give you a question using one the 5W’s or the H? They can then bring the question in and ask their class to help them answer it.

Fairytale Investigations is the topic for this half term. The children will be helping different Fairy-tale characters to solve problems using their scientific knowledge. Red Riding Hood might need help deciding which material is best to keep her dry in the woods and Goldilocks may need help keeping her porridge warm.

In ICT we are concentrating on the importance of E-Safety and how the children should keep safe when using the internet. Visit the Kidsmart website below for extra support on how you and your child can work together to keep safe when using the internet.

Our Creative Curriculum topic “The Great Fire of London” has got off to a brilliant start! The children have been visited by not one but two theatre groups and have been fully involved in both. They have learnt about how the fire started, where it started and the people that were involved in The Great Fire of London. We also have a trip to the Museum of London on the 14th and 16th of July along with a visit from the local fireman.

Keep checking back as we will have lots of photos to share with you!

Welcome back to the Summer term, we hope that you all had a lovely relaxing two  week Easter break. This half term is looking to be short but very exciting.

In English we will be carrying on our Non Chronological report work on Nocturnal Animals. The more information children can gather at home and school will really benefit them. Below are some videos to help support this. We would also like to encourage children to continue practising their spellings as this will help them with writing their reports. We will also be practising our descriptive writing skills and using our imaginations to describe some really ugly monsters.

This half term we will be covering the topics:

Securing number facts understanding shape

In Maths we will be working on problem solving, adding and subtracting, doubling and investigating 2D and 3D shapes.

Forces is our new Science topic for this half term. Miss Shermin has organised a mini trip to the park to have a look at these forces in action. We will be looking at friction, pushing, pulling and gravity. Ask your children what forces they know about and when they would be used.

This half term in Creative Curriculum we will be studying the topic Our World. In this unit of work we will be learning about the area around us. We will be looking at maps of our local area and identifying the physical features such as parks, buildings, water and roads. We will also be learning to read and finally create our own maps.

Our new topic is Handling Data. In this topic children will be collecting their own data and using different ICT software to display what they have found out.

Welcome back to a new half term. Like the previous, this half term is looking to be very exciting for both children and staff!

In English our first unit of work is “Silly Stuff.” Children will be learning about similies, alliteration and onomatopoeia and finally writing their own “silly” poems. We can’t wait to see what they come up with. We will be posting them on this page once the children have written them… We are sure there will be a few poets who didn’t even know it!

Unsure of what Onomatopoeia is? Watch this useful video!

Alliteration

Terry Green introduces alliteration in an informative, entertaining and educational video. Great for a plenary, introduction or revision. You can find more educational videos on Davesgud's YouTube channel.

In the first two weeks of Maths we will be working on our adding, subtracting, dividing, dividing with remainders and multiplying skills along with solving a range of 1 and 2 step word problems. We are encouraging children to use the number line method as seen below. If you would like to support your child at home please ask your teacher to demonstrate this method to you!

Some children will also be using the column method. Please see the video below for support or again please ask your teacher for help!

Science looks like it will be very exciting this half term as we will be learning all about Dinosaurs! We will be sorting and (if the weather holds up) digging for dinosaur bones! There is also the chance of 150 new species of Dinosaurs being discovered right here at William Bellamy Primary School.

On Monday the 17th March 2014, Rouge, Raudonas and Red Class went to visit The Natural History Museum. We looked at the fossils of lots of different dinosaurs and learnt plenty of new information to help us in our quest to create our own dinosaur museum.

Lal and Vermelho will be visiting the museum on Tuesday 18th March 2014! We can't wait to see what they get up to!

In RE our new topic is called “Special Places.” We will be looking at Religious specials and why they are special. Children will also have the opportunity to talk about their own special places and they are special to them.

This half term Year 2 will be starting a new topic called Silly Stuff which is a musical unit. We will be using our voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes, play tuned and untuned instruments musically , listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music. Lastly we will be experimenting with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music. We are hoping to link both our English Topics and Creative Curriculum topic together to create some “Silly Musical Poems.” Wish us luck!!!

These are the two stories we will be learning from. If you have these at home, read them with your child. This would be a great way to support their learning!

Alternatively, you could watch these two different versions.

English Talking Book - The Three Little Pigs

Three Little Pigs is a very famous story that tells us how laziness can cause us more troubles and teaches us not to shirk away our responsibilities to enjoy the moment. To buy this title or any other interesting Appuseries titles please visit http://www.appuseries.com

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

"The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka. Illustrations by Lane Smith. Read by martellorules http://www.youtube.com/user/martellorules I do not own this story, illustrations, or voice acting. I simply wanted to show my students a version of this story where it is read well and has moving pictures.

Our next Traditional Tale is The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be using this sotry to help us write our own version of a Traditional Tale. You can help your child by discussing what would happen if a character in the story was changed. How would this affect the story?

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Traditional folk tale. Three billy goats want to cross the bridge to eat the lush green grass. A mean and nasty Troll lives under the bridge and wants to eat them. Will they cross the bridge or will the troll get them first.... Click here you like to buy book.

In Maths our first topic is learning about fractions. In particular we will be learning about halves and quarters of shapes and numbers. Below is a link to help support your child with this topic.

We are also learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, repeating patterns and Lines of Symmetry. Below is a link to help support your child with this new topic.

This half term our Creative Curriculum Topic is about Florence Nightingale.

As part of the children's Christmas Homework they will need to find out some interesting facts about her.

Come back to our Year 2 page after the Christmas Holidays to read the facts the children found out.

Picture 1

On the 14th and 15th January, Florence Nightingale came to visit us! We learnt lots of new information which will help us in our Creative Curriculum lessons. We watched her bandage soldiers and even had the chance to bandage our friends!

In ICT our new Unit is called Controlling and Sensing.

Children will be learning to give directions to a Beebot (below) using the appropriate language (up, down, left, right, turn, forwards, backwards). They will also learn how to give directions from one place to another.

Can your child give you directions from home to school, the supermarket or a family members house?

Test them to see!
