What an amazing trip Year 1 had this week.

Valance House is the place to go!

Why not pay a visit and see what your child can tell you about the Dagenham Fair?

Year 1 Bleu have been chosen to take part in the

'Growing in Dagenham Project'

To find out how we get on, please take a look with your child.

On Tuesday 12th April, we worked in class. We talked about how often we eat vegetables and fruit. We thought about what we have ever grown or seen growing. We played a great game of guess the vegetable.

Mathletics

Year 1 are getting really excited about Mathletics! Mathletics is a website which helps you to enjoy and improve your maths. It marks your answers and can give you help if you get stuck when you click on the question mark.

In Live Mathletics, you can enter Maths races against other people in your class, your school or across the whole world!
When you answer questions correctly, you receive credits which you can spend in the shop to develop your own avatar.

Summer 2

Hooray... Let's go on holiday!

Hooray… Let’s go on Holiday is a fantastic topic where the children will be finding out all about holidays!

The home project that we would like children to complete is a map of places of interest to them in the world. We would like children to go into a newsagents and choose a travel guide that appeals to them. They are to choose 5 countries that they find interesting and research the countries finding a fact that is interesting to them. They are then to write a sentence using the fact. Children can also draw a picture of something that they found out and attach it to the map. You may present this in any way that you wish, however there is an example below to help you.

Please return the project on Tuesday 7th June 2016 ready for the children to share what they have learnt.

English

This term in English our genres include survival guides, diary entries and narratives. The children will be writing many texts including a retelling with a twist the story Lost and Found, a diary entry from the point of view of a penguin and a guide to surviving the artic.

We will be reinforcing and developing key skills that have focussed on this year such as:

· Capital letter and full stops

· Fingers spaces

· Writing on the line and letter formation

· Using conjunctions to extend a sentence

· Using adjectives and adverbs

Maths

Throughout the summer term in maths we will cover many topics including money, shape, measures, addition, subtraction, numbers and fractions.

The children will be finding more and less from a number and identifying halves and quarters from amounts and shapes. We will be reinforcing skills   required for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and how to apply these skills when calculating with money. For example: how to add amounts to find a total and working out change. We will also learn how to name and sort common 3D shapes and children will learn how to identify the features of 3D shapes.

International Primary Curriculum

Our IPC topic for Summer 2 is a geography and history based unit called ‘Hooray...Let’s go on holiday!’ We’ll be finding out the places people go to on holiday, how they get to their holiday destination, some of the things people do on holiday, the holidays that we have had in our own past and the holidays other people have had in the past.

PSHE

The topic for PSHE for Summer term is called living together. The children will learn about many factors such as outdoor safety and cooperation in the group and environment.

Modern Foreign Language

In French the children will be learning phrases linked with emotions. The children will be learning how to say the words happy, sad, tired, angry, excited and worried.

RE

Our RE topics for Summer Term are called ‘Special Things’ and    ‘Caring for the World’. Throughout the topics we will be learning about religious artefacts and exploring environmental                   responsibilities.

Summer 1

Home Learning Project

After the huge success and support from the previous IPC Project the children have decided that they would like another project. So for those parents that are eager, here is the project for next half term so that you can have a head start over Easter.

This half term our topic is called "The Dagenham Town Show." When the show was at its very best a parade would begin and travel through Dagenham to the location of where the show was set up. Children and adults alike would dance, sing and dress up as they travelled through the streets entertaining the passers by!

Some children and adults also wore decorative masks as part of costumes for their performance. This is where our home learning project comes in. On Thursday 26th May 2016 year one will be holding their own parade. We would love for your children to create their our masquerade mask to wear as part of the parade.

Below are some examples of what they could look like... But it is entirely up to you. The aim of this project is that it is something fun for both children and parents to do together and enjoy.

We hope that you will support us in making our parade as fun for the children as possible.

Feathery Friends

Year One were visited by some feathery friends. We watched them fly around the hall and used our ears to listen as they flew above us. Sometimes we couldn't see them because they were so quiet!

English

This term in English our genres include information texts, dictionary's, poetry about a theme and grammar.

Whilst learning about information texts we will be learning about  non-fiction texts and fiction texts and the features that make them similar or different. We will be producing our own information texts using facts, captions, headings and subheadings.

We will then move onto poetry about a theme where we will produce our own poems about an object or possession of our own choice.

This half term grammar will also be a focus. We will be using prefixes and suffixes  and understanding how they change a word.

Maths

Throughout the first summer term in maths we will cover many topics including money, shape, measures,    addition, subtraction, numbers and fractions.

Spring 2

We hope you had a great week off! We hope that you are ready to get back into school and start learning some amazing new things!

Home Learning Project!

As part of our IPC and Science topic this half term, we thought it would be amazing if children could choose a flower or insect that they are interested in and create a fact file and life sized model of it. You can use whichever materials that you want and make it as big or as small as you like. You can use recycled materials from your house, paints, paper mache, plastercine or anything you can get your hands on! At the end of the topic we will hold a Flowers and Insects display for parents to come and see.

PARENTS WE HOPE THAT YOU GET INVOLVED TOO! THERE IS AN AWARD FOR THE BEST PARENT HELPER!

The Bug Parade

All of Year One would like to say a huge thank you for all of your support for creating the Insects and Flowers for the Bug Parade. We were absolute amazed by the effort and obviously time that went into making these fabulous creations. It was evident in the children's faces how proud they were of what they had achieved with you! We hope that you enjoyed making these models as much as the children and we cannot wait to see what you all come up with next for The Dagenham Town Show Parade!

Thank you for your support.

Year One teachers, teaching assistants and children.

1 Bleu bug collection, thank you grown ups for your help.

English

Our English Topics for this half term include Fairy Tales and Stories from a familiar setting. Throughout the topic the children will perform fairy tales, describe characters using interesting adjectives and write their own versions of class traditional stories focusing on what happens in the beginning middle and end.

We will also begin the topic Stories with Familiar Settings. We will be reading stories that are from settings that we know and use them to write our own stories.

Maths

In Maths, children will be consolidating their skills in number by revisiting odd and even numbers, doubling and halving. We will also be learning about the place value of 2 digit numbers and working out how many tens and ones a 2 digit number has. We will then compare these numbers using vocabulary such as more and less.

The children will also be learning how to measure length, weight and capacity. They will then develop skills in estimating and comparing results. We will be using language such as heavier/lighter. Full/empty and short/tall.

Spring 1

Happy New Year Everyone! All of Year One hope that you had a lovely Christmas and a well deserved rest! Below is an overview of what children will be learning in Year One this half term. Keep checking back to see what we have learnt and any fantastic experiences we have been involved in!

Something fun at home!

Your IPC homework for this half term is to create a diary through pictures. This links to both English and IPC learning for this half term and is great to consolidate the learning and ideas of the week. We would like you to take a picture a day, print it and write a sentence about what you have done throughout the whole half term. You can then see how much you have changed and all the interesting things that you and your family get up to! It is up to you to decide how you wish to present this! We are looking for some fantastic, creative ideas.

Parents/Carers this will be a great memory to keep for when your child has grown up!

English

This half term in Year 1, we will be learning about recounts. We will find out about the features of a re-count as well as how to write our own. We will learn about time connectives such as first, next, then and finally and learn how to apply them in our sentences to give an account of an event or experience in chronological order.

Throughout this term will be developing punctuation skills by learning how to use exclamation marks, question marks and commas in lists.

Maths

In maths, children will be developing their skills in counting, reading and writing numbers to 100. We will also be beginning to count in multiples of twos, fives and tens.

The children will also learn how to do repeated addi-tion. This strategy involves adding the same number again and again in order to find the answer to a sim-ple multiplication problem.

Make sure you log into Mathletics as your childs teacher will be giving tasks each week tp support the learning that they have done that week.

We have been learning to share objects into groups of 2, 5 and 10. Children have been using the vocabulary equal and not equal to described how the number was shared.

We have been using the vocabulary more, less and equal to compare numbers. Here are some that we did to test our friends. Can you decide which numbers are more, less or equal?

IPC

Our IPC topic for this half term is an ICT/ Computing based unit called ‘Say Cheese’. During the topic children will learn how to take photos and how to download, save, edit and print photos. The exciting topic will begin with the children acting as photographers, taking cool snaps of their peers in our school’s wonderful reading book nooks. We will then have a visit from a photographer who will give us tips on how to use technology to improve our photos and our photography skills. During this project we will also be finding out how to publish photos on the internet to share with others and very importantly about ways to stay safe online.

We visited The Tate Modern Gallery in London! Look at what we saw!

Science

Our Science topic this half term is Seasonal Changes. We will be learning about the changes in the weather and comparing the differences between the seasons.

We looked at how the different seasons change what we wear. What would you wear in the Winter?

Autumn 2

Welcome back from half term.

We are so happy to be back to find out our new topic.

International Primary Curriculum

Our new IPC topic for this half term is “Shopping.” Our topic will begin with an out of school learning experience to Asda. During our visit, children will have a guided tour of the store and an opportunity to sample food from different sections. Throughout the topic we will be turning out outdoor learning area into a shop, learning about money from all over the world, where produce comes from and finally making items to sell reading for our winter market. The winter market will be held on the last week of the half term and we hope that all of our mummy’s and daddy’s will be able to come and see what we have learnt!

English

In Year One we will be learning about instructions as well as traditional books and fairy tales. We will be exploring the characters and settings of some well known stories including the use of adjectives to describe what these look like. We will be writing instructions to help the children in reception to cross the road safely and how to safely make sandwiches.

We will also be learning about the features of non-fiction texts. We will learn about the labels, lists and captions and begin to write our own.

In our topic Fantasy Stories, we made islands for Peter and Wendy to visit!

Some of us will be learning how to subtract ten using a 100 square and will then move on to subtracting 2 digit numbers using a 100 square. We will be consolidating our number bonds to 10 which we will be practising everyday so that we are able to do this mentally. We will continue to learn about money and will be selecting which coins we need to make a total

We looked at length in our maths.

We found items in class that are longer or shorter than our ruler.

We know that we have to start at 0, not the beginning of the ruler.

We know that the item we are measuring must be flat along the side of the ruler.

Some of us can even count the centimetres.

Before and after.

We understand how to use before in a sentence:

  • Before I went to school, I ate my breakfast.
  • Before I went to bed, I brushed my teeth.
  • Before I went to sleep, someone read me a story.
  • Can you make another sentence and tell a friend you know?
